Environmental Education Programs

Healing the urban forest in San Francisco and cities around the world requires help from all of us, now and into the future.

TreePeople's Environmental Education programs for students, youth groups and teachers have a common goal: to help young people grow into lifelong caretakers of the environment.

Grow With Us!

At Trees for Humanity, our job as educators is not to tell, but to involve. Children, teens and even teachers learn by doing, as they get outdoors with us and "dig in."

Our stewards-in-the-making learn the benefits of growing the urban forest: Cleaner air. More plentiful supplies of fresh water. Safer and more beautiful neighborhoods. Plus, it's fun!

School Programs

It's never too early to introduce new generations to the wonders of trees and forests.

TreePeople's programs for schools engage young people in Los Angeles to discover the science and significance of the urban forest, as they take part in protecting it.

Programs Offered

  • Eco Tours (K - 5th Grade)
  • Generation Earth (6th - 12th Grade)
  • Campus Forestry (K - 12th Grade)

Youth Group Programs

Teens and pre-teens can be powerful agents of change, especially when they inspire their friends to get involved, too!

Trees for Humanity works with youth groups on action-oriented projects that make Los Angeles cleaner, greener and cooler. Our goal is to empower youth with the skills and resources they need to complete their own projects to improve the urban environment.

Programs Offered

  • Generation Earth's Teen Action Program
  • Community Cooldown: Teen leaders step up to make a difference
  • Programs for Scouts: Scouts play a big role in the work Trees for Humanity is doing to heal the urban landscape

Teacher Programs

If you are a teacher reading this...bravo! The fact you're here means you want to help your students learn about the environment and what they can do to improve it.

Teachers play a key role in growing the environmental stewards of the future. Trees for Humanity supports you in that role by providing resources and training to help you share the benefits of environmental education with the young people of San Francisco.

The case for environmental education

Good environmental education addresses a number of challenges faced by public schools today. In Closing the Achievement Gap, a study undertaken for California's State Education and Environment Roundtable, researchers found that high-quality environmental education can result in:

  • Better performance on standardized measures of academic achievement in reading, writing, math, science and social studies
  • Reduced discipline and classroom management problems
  • Increased engagement and enthusiasm for learning
  • Greater pride and ownership in accomplishments

Everyone wins: you, your students, your school, your students' parents and the generations of people who will benefit from a cleaner, healthier world.

Training and Workshops

Have you ever wondered how to collect or redirect precious rainwater? Or how to move away from a thirsty planted landscape to a more climate appropriate one?

Or, does being involved in our local mountain restoration inspire you?

Trees for Humanity teaches ordinary people the extraordinary skills of planting and caring for trees throughout the community, creating sustainable landscapes around their home and restoring the local mountain watershed.
